Position Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and team-oriented professional to lead Pennybacker’s Portfolio Reporting team in Austin, TX. Job Location

The role will be in-office in Austin, TX for the majority of the time with moderate work from home flexibility. Candidates must reside in or around Austin, TX, or be willing to relocate prior to the start date.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions
Portfolio Accounting – Real Estate and Credit
  • Lead monthly Real Estate reporting process ensuring timeliness, completeness, and accuracy
  • Collaborate with FAR (Finance, Accounting, & Investor Reporting), Portfolio Optimization, and Alpha (Data) teams to optimize processes and increase accuracy and efficiency of existing processes
  • Oversee the accounting relationship with joint venture partners, third-party property managers, and servicers (loan, valuation, and others)
  • Ensure property and portfolio reporting complies with partnership agreements and firm accounting guidelines
  • Lead a team of three, providing mentorship, training, and best practices guidance
  • Review work performed, reconciliations, adjusting entries, new account mappings, new property manager hierarchies, and monthly construction and property management fee calculations
  • Conduct data quality checks on property financial statements, budget/reforecast, rent rolls, and legal documents for acquisitions, refinances, and dispositions
  • Oversee onboarding of new credit investments; review of interest calculations, income workbooks, and debt covenants
Portfolio Valuation – Real Estate and Credit
  • Manage the quarterly valuation process (internally and with our valuation servicer) to ensure timely, complete, and accurate valuations are presented to the Valuation Committee
  • Review valuation binders for completeness and accuracy
  • Project manage all aspects of the valuation process including:
  • Scoping with our servicer and tracking progress
  • Coordinating document and data submissions to the servicer
  • Reviewing working capital adjustments, deal-level waterfalls, and return metrics
  • Ensuring appropriate and timely review by Portfolio Optimization team
  • Ensuring completeness and accuracy of final valuation binders
  • Training team members and implementing best practices
Portfolio Data and Reporting
  • Collaborate with the internal data team to manage and improve the procedures for processing data from property managers and servicers to our internal system of record
  • Ensure financials are properly mapped and transactions are appropriately classified
  • Perform detailed reviews of large data sets at the asset level that are used in quarterly letters, institutional reports, and due diligence requests
Audit and Tax
  • Oversee the management of portfolio documents for annual audit
  • Provide valuation-related support to auditors
  • Coordinate with joint venture partners to receive all information needed for the tax preparers to prepare the federal and state tax returns timely
  • Ensure timely filing and distribution of federal and state tax returns
  • Review franchise taxes and ensure timely payments

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance or 8+ years relevant experience; advanced degree preferred; CPA required
  • 8+ years of work experience in private equity, banking, commercial real estate, or other investment/finance-related area
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and a proven ability to achieve results through others
  • Experience with valuations and investment level waterfalls is preferred
  • Strong technical skills in accounting with advanced knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word; willingness to learn new technologies
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Confident under pressure and comfortable meeting deadlines
  • Self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask and balance competing priorities
